Gareth Bale hires ex-SAS soldiers to guard his family

Footballer Gareth Bale has brought in a team of ex-SAS soldiers to guard his family after enduring a nightmare year of threats and intimidation.

The Real Madrid winger and his fiancee Emma Rhys-Jones have spent £500,000 beefing up security with the ex-troops, covert CCTV and guard dogs at their luxury converted farm house in Wales.

Miss Rhys-Jones’ grandparents and other relatives were firebombed last year after getting caught up in a drugs vendetta over a missing suitcase containing £750,000.

Cars were set on fire and threats were made involving the Bale’s four-year-old daughter Alba Violet.

A neighbour said: ‘It’s like Colditz in there, they have really pepped up security in the last few months.

‘You can see guards patrolling the perimeter – they’re there all the time and have their own hut and accommodation.’

The couple were advised to increase their security in Madrid and at their £4million home in the Vale of Glamorgan.

The Bales face a further security risk when Emma’s father Martin Rhys-Jones is freed from jail in the US.

Rhys-Jones, 53, earned a lot of enemies after a worldwide investment fraud which put him behind bars for five years.

Superstar Gareth and Emma, 26, fear they may be targeted by one of his victims seeking revenge for being ripped off.

A relative of the couple, who have another daughter Nava Valentina, one, said: ‘Gareth is very worried by what’s been going on.

‘He and Emma have been advised to keep their heads down but her family has caused some sleepless nights.

‘It must be very worrying for them, especially with two young children.’

Emma plans to spend more time on the 10-acre estate as she starts to make wedding plans following their engagement last year.

But £85m Gareth will be in Madrid now that a potential move to Man Utd has hit the rocks.

The relative said: ‘Like any loving husband and dad he worries for Emma and the girls when he’s not there.

‘The extra security will give him some piece of mind and let him get on with his football.’
